Quand il pleut, c'est à en boire debout. Et quand le ciel s'éclaircit, les boys sortent jouer. Creusant un canal vertical jusqu’à la plage, l’eau emprisonnée de la rivière Waimea en ressort propulsée sous forme de vague stationnaire. Et là, c'est « un pour tous et tous pour un! »
Waimea veut dire « eau rouge » en Hawaïen, et la rivière de Waimea s’écoule dans la baie du même nom. Située sur la Rive-Nord d'Oahu à Hawaii, cette baie est reconnue pour le surf de grosses vagues ainsi que pour la compétition « Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational Surfing Contest ». Autrefois, la rivière s'ouvrait à la baie grâce au passage des canots qui y voyageait. Aujourd'hui, avec l’embouchure de la baie bloquée par d’immenses dunes, la rivière s'inonde à chaque averse.
Cette rivière, inondée de toute cette pluie, reste emprisonnée jusqu'à ce que l'on regroupe une poignée de pros surfeurs, de jeunes rippers et quiconque parent, ainsi que peut-être même l'occasionnel touriste n'y connaissant rien aux eaux Hawaiiennes, afin de pelleter et creuser à la main un petit passage de la rive menant à l'océan.
L'eau commence donc lentement à jaillir jusqu'à la mer en créant une sorte de petite glissade d'eau bossue et voilà que c’est parti! Les gens se livrent à la course en accaparant leurs bodyboards tandis que d’autres s'y lancent avec des plateaux de cafétéria et même des pagaies de body surf! C’est le sprint du premier à profiter de l’action!
L'eau de la rivière Rouge commence à se déplacer de plus en plus rapidement en poussant le sable vers le fond, créant ainsi des bancs sur lesquels l'eau rage à une vitesse incroyable forçant la projection vers le ciel et presto!... Une vague instantanée.
Le passage s'élargit ensuite dû à l'effet « sable mouvant » dans le canal, les vagues deviennent de plus en plus grosses et puis les planches de surf font leurs sorties. Jamie O'Brien, John John Florence et ses frères, Makua Rothman, Kiron Jabour et un tas d'autres pro surfeurs et sauveteurs locaux habitués à ce genre d'action profitent au max du déferlement de ces vagues malades en exécutant des « pop shuvits », des « 360 » et, s’ils sont chanceux, des minis tonneaux complets.
Malheureusement, la vague ne dure qu'environ une heure donc une sérieuse compétition s’impose pour pouvoir en profiter. Ceux qui ne se montrent pas dignes de l'action sont très vite crachés à la mer, un peu comme tiré hors scène par une canne sortie de derrière les rideaux suite à une performance trop pourrie.
C’est un terrain de jeu houleux et il arrive d'être projeté plus loin au large ou d'être pris dans un courant d'eau rapide. Là, on se compte chanceux d'avoir une laisse nous rattachant à notre planche, sinon, l’on peut remercier le ciel d'avoir des sauveteurs sur place pour tirer notre pauvre cul hors de danger. Digging waves
When it rains it pours, and when the skies clear up, the boys come out to play. Digging a trench vertically along the beach, Waimea Bay's breaking river surges through creating a standup wave. And it's all for one, and one for all!
Waimea Bay is located on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, and is significantly known for big wave surfing and the "Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational Surfing contest". The Bay is at the mouth of the Waimea River, Waimea meaning "Red Water" in Hawaiian. Now when it rains, the river fills up and is blocked by huge dunes of beach sand, which originally opened up into the bay back in the days of canoeing upstream.
So this river builds and builds from all the downpour and it has no release until you put together a couple of pro surfers, some groms and just any mom and pop, maybe even throw in a couple of tourists that know nothing about Hawaiian waters and you get a group of people shoveling and hand digging a small passageway from the river bank leading out to the ocean.
The water slowly starts gushing out to sea, creating a small bumpy kind of water slide. The guys and occasional lady grab their body boards to start, others get their hands on food serving trays, maybe a couple of body surf paddles, and battle it out for who’s gonna "drop in first".
The Red river water starts moving faster and faster pushing the sand around at the bottom, creating sand banks with raging water moving incredibly fast over them, forcing the water into the sky and there you have it.... your basic stand up river wave.
The passage gets wider and wider from the sand earth quaking into the canal, the waves get bigger and bigger and then the heavies break out the surfboards. Jamie O' Brien, John John Florence and his brothers, Makua Rothman, Kiron Jabour, a bunch of other local pro surfers and lifeguards are on the regular on this sick raging river wave action busting out pop shuvit's, 360's and the odd occasional air and if you're lucky, full on tiny barrel action.
Unfortunately you have to be on it, coz the most rideable wave only lasts about an hour, so there is some serious battle action going on for wave time. If you can't handle and step it up, you will get flushed out to sea, kinda like if you are on stage and the cane comes out from behind the curtains and you get pulled off coz you suck!
It's gnarly and you keep getting pulled further out or are stuck in some rip current of quick water. You're stoked if you had a leash on your board, otherwise you are totally screwed and you're thanking the universe that there are lifeguards around ready to pull your sorry ass out! Till the next rain!
